The Octopus, like other species, is now threatened by climate change and its effects on the seas and oceans. This animal is also experiencing a boom among consumer preferences, resulting in an expansion of specific fisheries.
The biological characteristics of the octopus do not seem to preclude captive breeding, and there are no efficient experiences in this regard to date.
Its resilience is therefore not assessable to date due to the lack of specific data on the stock in the wild and the quantities caught, which often escape statistics.
In this scenario we risk seeing the presence of octopus drastically decrease then consequently have an incalculable impact on marine biodiversity.
Octopolis, the city of octopus, was born and moved the first stages of its construction in late 2024 to meet the challenge of octopus conservation.
The first 100 terracotta amphorae were submerged in the Natural Park in front of Talamone (Tuscany, Italy) at a distance of 200 to 300 meters from the coast. The amphorae were first numbered by researchers at the University of Siena and then tied to lines at 10-meter intervals in two rows of 50 amphorae.
They were then lowered to locations chosen for suitable seafloor conditions at a depth varying around 10 meters. During the 18- to 24-month monitoring period, researchers from the university will dive every 20 to 30 days to assess the condition of the amphorae, any colonization by the octopus and collect data necessary for the scientific study of the octopus.
The study will monitor the octopus’ presence in the area and its ability to proliferate in an environment protected from intensive and non-selective Fisheries.
The marine protected area allows the proliferation of life of many other species thus achieving the maintenance of the health and biodiversity of the marine ecosystem.
